Meaning behind
Meaning behind
This icon comes from Christ Pantocrator, ruler over all, and if you look closely the two sides of his expression don't match. One eye is calm, the other is sharper, like mercy and judgment sitting in the same look. Revelation 1:16 describes eyes like blazing fire, and monks were painting that centuries before anyone wrote it down. It's not a soft face made to comfort you. It's one made to see straight through you.
